6 Common Refrigeration Compressors for HVAC and Refrigeration
2025/03/13
The refrigeration compressor is the core component of the refrigeration system, which compresses refrigerant gas to increase its temperature and pressure, and then achieves refrigeration effect through condensation, throttling, and evaporation processes. The performance of refrigeration compressors directly affects the energy efficiency, reliability, and service life of the entire refrigeration system. According to their structure and working principle, common refrigeration compressors can be divided into the following categories.
1. Piston type refrigeration compressor
Working principle: The piston refrigeration compressor drives the piston to perform reciprocating motion inside the cylinder through the crankshaft connecting rod mechanism, completing the process of suction, compression, and exhaust inside the cylinder. When the piston moves downwards, the intake valve opens and refrigerant gas enters the cylinder; When the piston moves upward, the intake valve closes and the gas is compressed. The compressed high-temperature and high-pressure gas enters the condenser through the exhaust valve.
characteristic
Wide applicability: It can be used for refrigeration applications in different temperature ranges such as low temperature, ultra-low temperature, and high temperature.
Mature and reliable structure: simple design, mature technology, and easy maintenance.
High durability: The components have strong wear resistance and a long service life.
High noise and vibration: Due to the reciprocating motion characteristics, noise and vibration are more pronounced during operation.
High maintenance requirements: components such as piston rings and valve plates need to be replaced regularly.
Main applications
Household air conditioning and commercial refrigeration equipment.
Industrial refrigeration, such as food processing, pharmaceutical cold storage, and low-temperature laboratories.
Cold chain logistics, including refrigerated trucks, refrigerated containers, etc.

2. Rotary refrigeration compressor
Working principle: The rotary compressor compresses refrigerant by eccentrically rotating the rotor inside the stator. There are mainly two types: slide type and rolling rotor type. Sliding vane compressors use sliding vanes to slide within the rotor slots, forming multiple compression chambers to complete the compression process; The rolling rotor type gradually compresses gas through the small gap between the eccentric rotor and the stator.
characteristic
Small size, light weight, suitable for compact refrigeration equipment.
Smooth operation, minimal vibration, and low noise.
Suitable for variable frequency control, fast response, and high efficiency at partial loads.
Suitable for small to medium-sized refrigeration equipment, but cannot meet the demand for ultra large refrigeration capacity.
Main applications
Household air conditioning, small commercial air conditioning.
Vehicle air conditioning systems, such as cars, buses, trains, etc.
Small refrigeration equipment, such as refrigerators and freezers.

3. Vortex refrigeration compressor
Working principle: The scroll compressor uses a pair of interlocking scroll discs (one fixed and one rotating) to compress gas. The rotating scroll moves along its orbit, gradually compressing the refrigerant from the outside to the center, and finally entering the high-pressure exhaust port.
characteristic
Compact structure and high energy efficiency ratio.
Smooth operation, low noise, suitable for high-end air conditioning and precision cooling needs.
Low maintenance costs due to the absence of valves and fewer moving parts, resulting in less wear and tear.
Suitable for variable frequency control, with excellent partial load performance.
Main applications
Commercial air conditioning and heat pump systems.
Cold chain transportation, such as refrigerated trucks and ocean freight refrigeration.
Household air conditioning and central air conditioning systems.

4. Screw refrigeration compressor
Working principle: The screw refrigeration compressor mainly relies on the rotational motion of a pair of interlocked rotors (usually a male rotor and a female rotor) to compress the refrigerant gas. Its working principle is based on volume change. Through the rotation of the rotor, the refrigerant undergoes periodic volume changes in the enclosed space composed of the rotor, body, and end cap, thus completing the process of suction, compression, and discharge.
characteristic
Suitable for high cooling demand, such as industrial refrigeration.
Continuous compression, smooth operation, and minimal vibration.
Low maintenance requirements and long lifespan.
Suitable for long-term operation and can be used for all-weather refrigeration systems.
Main applications
Large central air conditioning and industrial cooling systems.
Food processing cold storage, petrochemical industry.
High and low temperature laboratory, freeze-drying equipment.

5. Centrifugal refrigeration compressor
Working principle: A device that uses the high-speed rotation of the impeller to do work on the refrigerant, thereby increasing the pressure and temperature of the refrigerant gas. Its working principle is mainly based on the momentum exchange principle in fluid mechanics, which applies kinetic energy to the incoming refrigerant gas through a high-speed rotating impeller, increasing its pressure and velocity. Then, in the diffuser, some of the kinetic energy is converted into pressure energy, and finally high-pressure and high-temperature refrigerant gas is output, suitable for applications with large refrigeration capacity.
characteristic
High efficiency, suitable for large cooling systems.
Suitable for long-term continuous operation.
High initial investment and complex maintenance.
Main applications
Ultra large central air conditioning systems, such as high-rise buildings, airports, and data centers.
Refrigeration in industries such as chemical and petroleum refining.

6. Magnetic levitation refrigeration compressor
Working principle: The magnetic levitation bearing system consists of four parts: rotor, sensor, controller, and actuator. The actuator includes two parts: electromagnet and power amplifier. In a magnetic levitation refrigeration compressor, a permanent magnet synchronous motor drives the rotor to rotate, while the rotor is suspended inside the stator by a magnetic field, avoiding any physical contact.
characteristic
Ultra quiet, low energy consumption.
The maintenance cost is extremely low.
Main applications
Office buildings, office buildings, data centers, hospitals, laboratories.
